NEWS & EVENTS

January 18, 2009
Sadly, the politics surrounding the organizers of the various 2008 Calgary area dragonboat festivals led to much confusion, chaos, and delays, eventually capsizing the Aquanauts dragonboating plans. (See what I did there? "Capsizing"? Heh. Funny guy.) However, we are already in the initial planning stages for 2009 and welcome new and returning paddlers to contact us about your summer plans!

Stayed tuned...we'll keep you posted as we learn more about the upcoming season.

The Aquanauts have had their first practice of the season, and sales of Ben-Gay have gone through the roof! The practice schedule is now up on the Team page for Aquanauts to view. See you all back on the water soon! (Why does everyone smell like wintergreen?....)

Finally, good news!! A new organization has received authorization to plan a Calgary dragon boat festival for this year. We aren't sure of any of the details yet, but we'll get those out to you as soon as we get them. Stay tuned!

URGENT: The City of Calgary has revoked the license for the ADBRF (Alberta Dragon Boat Racing Foundation) to use the Glenmore Reservoir for dragon boat practices and for the annual racing festival. The reasons given have been vague at best and preposterous at worst. It means the end of dragon boating for the Aquanauts and for hundreds of other Calgary-area paddlers unless we can get the city to change its collective mind. If you are interested in preserving dragon boating as a sport in Calgary, please contact your city alderman, or send an email to Alderman Brian Pincott, the representative for Ward 11 (which includes the Glenmore Reservoir). His address is brian.pincott@calgary.ca.

Another great year for the Aquanauts at the Calgary Dragonboat Festival! We battled strong winds and freezing rain to move up one place from last year and finish 4th in the B Division. Great job, Armstrong and company! Stay tuned for pictures as they become available.

August 24-26, 2007
Once again, the Aquanauts hit the water in their quest for gold at the Calgary Dragonboat Festival. See you there!

August 13, 2007
The Aquanauts are raffling a framed Shannon Lamb original piece of artwork to raise funds for next year's season. The scene beautifully captures the energy and colour of a dragonboat race in progress. Tickets for the draw can be purchased by contacting the Aquanauts or by visiting the Aquanauts' tent at the Calgary Dragonboat Festival (Aug. 24-26). Raffle tickets will be sold for $2 each, 3 for $5, or 10 for $10!

Attention, Aquanauts! If you don't have a shirt from last year, we need your size by Sunday, July 22nd! (If we don't hear from you by then, we're ordering XXL. It'll be big enough to wear to the prom!)

Aquanauts, check out the Team Login page for details about the upcoming Stampede BBQ. Yahoo!

We're looking for a few good men! (We'll even consider mediocre men, as long as you are dedicated.) Our boat is currently a wee bit estrogen-heavy, and we need a few more Y chromosomes in case any of our male paddlers get hit by a bus or a stray kayak or something. Drop us a line if you're interested!

February 3, 2007
The first team meeting has turned into a party (a potluck, no less) at Major Tom's place! Tune into the Team Login page to get the details.

January 9, 2007
It's the year 2007, and we still don't have flying cars! But that's the only disappointment you're going to have to suffer this year, because the Aquanauts are coming back!! Stay tuned for details about our first team meeting of the the year, and if you are looking for a team to join, drop us a line.

September 2, 2006
Aquanauts, if you were trying to complete our year-end survey but couldn't get in, the link on our Team Log-in page has now been fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience. We look forward to hearing from the rest of y'all!

September 16, 2006
Let it ride!!!! (This message is for Aquanauts only, so everyone else close your eyes for a moment.) The season windup Tiki BBQ is September 16th, and we want to see you all there! Log-in to our team area for location, time, and RSVP details.

Pictures from the Calgary Dragonboat picture are starting to trickle in (one of our paddlers, Dean, will be flooding us with 300 more very soon). Click here to check them out. August 11-13, 2006
Wow, what a weekend! The Aquanauts' first two races went so well that we were placed in Division B (gulp!). We went on to place fifth in the Division B final. That puts us in 29th place overall (out of over 70 teams), an amazing turnout for the Aquanauts' first year! In a moment of temporary, and apparently group, insanity the Aquanauts also decided to enter the Adrenaline Run: a full kilometre race that also included a 180 degree turn. We won't discuss the results of that race here since this is our website, and we just don't want to......

August 12, 2006
Houston, we have a race time! The Aquanauts' first race is Saturday morning at 9:10. Come out to the Glenmore Reservoir to cheer us on at the Calgary Dragon Boat Festival. Then, stick around for the day to watch our other races. And, last but not least, party away the evening with us at a free concert with Spirit of the West......yes, you heard me, Spirit of the #@$&-ing West!! Hell, yeah!

August 3, 2006
Our shirts are in, and do we look good! Also, our mascot finally has a name....Armstrong! (Seems kinda obvious in retrospect, don't it?)

January 2, 2006
The Aquanauts website is live! Oh, but you already knew that, didn't you? But did you know it is made with 100% recycled materials and is powered entirely by 32 hamsters on treadmills! Didn't, didja? (Neither did we.)

December 10, 2005
After lengthy and bitter discussion, the most important decision for the Aquanauts has finally been resolved, and it is.....blue. Yep, the jerseys will be blue. We also have a logo (smell us, aren't we just snazzy!) featuring our Aquanaut "mascot". Anyone have any ideas what to name him?

December 2, 2005
The first official meeting of the founding Aquanauts was held, and we now have a board to get things organized. We also have a Paddler Agreement that explains the basic commitment and behaviour expectations of the team.
